스트레스를 많이 받아요…

I was struggling to write my speech for our Speech Contest for the past 3, 4, 5 days. It was very difficult. I guess I’m not into writing speeches. I guess I’m just not into writing – period!

Today I finally finished the English draft of my speech. I’m so relieved that I’m done writing it in English. I’m going to translate it to Korean now and I assume it’s gonna be easier this time.

Far from it! Translating is really really REALLY difficult! Sad. I even dreamed of becoming a translator in the future. And I realized another thing. My Korean is not going anywhere at all.

Why did I even think of joining this speech contest? 😦

  1. don’t be too stressed! just treat it as a good experience ^^ i think it will be easier for you if you dont try to direct translate your speech from english to korean. when you do that, you tend to want to conform to the same kinds of expression and sentence structure. however, alot of expressions do not have direct translations.

i think it’s easier for you to just use the english version as a reminder of what you want to say and try ‘thinking in korean’ and writing the speech ^^

okay i think i sound confusing, i hope u get what i mean ^^ all the best for your speech contest!! 화이팅!

    • Thanks! This is just one of my frustrating moments. ㅋㅋㅋ When I wrote this yesterday, I was really tired and frustrated. I managed to finish writing my speech earlier (with the help of online dictionaries and wonderful people from hanlingo and lang-8 ^^)
And I do understand what you mean. I would love to do that, but my Korean is still so lacking that I still have to rely on the English version. Or maybe it’s not that it’s lacking, rather I’m lacking practice in writing and ‘thinking’ in Korean. I must practice more.

Why did I even think of joining this speech contest? –> Funny I wrote this yesterday (out of frustration) when I know exactly why I joined. I have no intention of winning. But if you join, a Korean exchange student will be assigned as your coach and will assist you in preparation for the speech contest. I think it’s a good opportunity to finally get to speak Korean correctly. *^^*

Also I get to read your blog today and it made me feel better. Whenever I read you blog, I find the inspiration again to continue studying Korean – 열심히!

      Thanks! ^_^
